ECONOMIC OVERVIEW ─ STILL ON THE BRINK

As the first half of the year reached an unsettling conclusion, there was little cause for optimism that the global recovery picture was showing much improvement from the disasters that beset life in the first quarter.

Internationally, stock prices fell sharply for most of June; factory production fell together with demand; consumer confidence fell sharply on both sides of the Atlantic and with it consumer spending.
